Home of the nation's capital; home to a third of Canada's population. Before European settlement, the land was home to several thriving First Nations tribes including the Iroquois Six Nations. The settlement of the Europeans led to wars that would claim the land for the British and drive out the Americans.
Over time, Ontario became an industry and manufacturing giant. In politics, the Ontario Progressive Conservatives governed the province from 1943 until 1985. The early leftleaning Tories created social programs and developed Ontario's strong economy. In 1985 the PCs shifted right and lost power. Since then, Ontario has seen a Liberal
government supported by the NDP, a surprise NDP victory, the Conservatives return with Mike Harris's common sense revolution, and the defeat of the PCs by Dalton McGuinty's Liberals.
Federally, Ontario has a massive 107 seats in the House of Commons. The Ontario vote is crucial for the feds to pin down, but it is difficult because support is regionally dependent. Generally, urban areas are Liberal or NDP supporters, while rural areas tend to support the Conservatives. |
